Silver Jewelry

Silk&Silver Jewelry silver products are manufactured in sterling silver. The oxidation typical to silver may be cleaned off with a jewelry polishing cloth. After cleaning your piece of jewelry with a polishing cloth, you should wash the piece in mild soap water so the detergent from the cloth will not stain any of the clothing you wear. we do not recommend silver polish liquids for any of our silver jewelry. Oxidized silver jewelry can be cleaned at Silk&Silver Jewelry Atelier for a fee.

Gold Jewelry

Silk&Silver Jewelry gold products can be cleaned with special cleaning agents for gold, available in jewelry shops. We recommend regular care for gold jewelry in which the jewelry is cleaned and polished at Silk&Silver Jewelry Service for a fee, and the setting of the stones is checked.

Gold plated jewelry has a little bit more care that plating can be damaged by strokes, detergent etc.

To make it last long, it's very important that you keep it dry. Never bathe or spray perfume on your jewelry. (never keep your jewelry in the bathroom) chemical reactions with chlorine and other elements such as perspiration can lead to tarnishing. With gold plated metals humidity is the enemy, if possible try to seal and store in the air-tight plastic baggie included with your purchase . Over time, the gold plating will start to wear. This is the normal wear and tear process and is not a result of a manufacturing defect.

  • Keep it dry! Apply makeup, hairspray or any type of lotion before putting on your jewelry, they may contain harsh chemicals that may damage your jewelry overtime.

  • For extra care, after each wear gently wipe each piece of jewelry clean of make up and skin oils with a jewelry polishing cloth.

  • Store jewelry separately so it doesn't scratch other jewelry... the best way is to seal and store in an air-tight plastic baggie to prevent tarnishing. We include one with all our chain necklaces.

  • Never use abrasives chemicals or products to clean your jewelry. Any alcohol based products can tarnish gold and silver plating irreperably.

  • Always last on, first off.

Jewelry with pearls

The best piece of advice for those who wear pearls is this: put your pearls on last and take them off first. It is a good idea to wipe your pearls with a clean, soft cloth after each time you wear them. For jewelry with pearls we recommend regular care, for a fee, in which the jewelry is cleaned at Silk&Silver Jewelry service and the stringing of the pearls is checked.

We recommend that jewelry items be stored in their original packaging.

Silk

Correct care will insure that you silk products will last for years without losing their quality. A few important rules need to be observed as silk is a natural fiber and cannot be treated as debonair as e.g. synthetic fiber.

Please pay special attention to the following instructions:

  • Never spray silk with perfume or deodorant

  • Never bleach silk

  • Never expose silk to direct sunlight for longer periods of time

  • Don't spray silk with water while ironing

  • Don't treat individual stains with water

  • Always iron the backside only

  • Never wring dry

In contrast to the widespread opinion that silk can only be dry cleaned, silk products can be washed by hand without being damaged.

  • Use a mild soap or specially formulated silk shampoos

  • Soak silk in luke warm water for 3-5 minutes. (If silk is dark or printed, do not let it soak. Just quickly wash it in cold water.)

  • Gently move the fabric during soaking from side to side. (Do not wring dry) Handle wet silk with even greater care as it is very delicate.

  • After a maximum of 5 minutes remove silk from water and rinse the fabric with cold water adding a tea spoon of vinegar to completely rid it of the soap.

  • Wrap silk in a dry towel to remove the remaining liquid. Use several layers when using dark or printed silk.

  • Roll out the silk and straighten it gently at the corners

  • Silk should always be ironed from the backside. It should always still be slightly moist. Check your iron's setting. Don't iron silk too hot. Always remember that silk is a protein structure much like human hair. Heat will damage it.

Observe these considerations and you will enjoy your silk products for a very long time.
